Simply put, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln would have been at a significant disadvantage if it stayed in the Big 12 while schools, such as the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma, left to join a different conference. Many people in Nebraska agreed with this sentiment, despite the fact that moving to the Big Ten would abandon traditional rivals.
Overall, Big Ten universities were perceived as being higher-quality academic institutions than Big 12 universities at the time. Since the University raised its academic profile, it was now able to attract higher quality students, faculty, and administrators to the University. In order to keep pace with the rest of the Big Ten, the University had to expand research on campus.
Thus, another positive effect of moving to the Big Ten Conference was the renewed focus on research at the University. In addition to a renewed focus on research opportunities, the move to the Big Ten also provided the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with membership on the Committee on Institutional Cooperation. The Committee on Institutional [9] Cooperation is a committee of all of the universities in the Big Ten Conference, as well as the University of Chicago.
In addition, membership on the committee is prestigious and exclusive, as it only includes Big Ten schools and the University of Chicago. Thus, membership on the committee raised the academic profile of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As mentioned before, joining the Big Ten enabled the University to recruit higher quality students, faculty, and administration. By having higher quality personnel on campus, there was an overall increase in ambition at the University.
In order to meet these expectations, the University had to elevate its goals and mindset. Without a doubt, sparking a new sense of ambition is a positive for any university, as it fuels excitement, passion, and motivation on campus.
By joining the Big Ten, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln ensured itself a strong financial future fueled by revenue from the conference. Since the creation of conferences, the Big Ten had always led the way in creating revenue for its members. To begin, the conference revolutionized college sports with the creation of the Big Ten network in August of However, the most crucial aspect of the creation of the Big Ten Network was the revenue the network provided to the conference.
Each member school of the Big Ten received roughly nine million dollars per year when the network was created in Just like with a new team, the assistant coaches said a big jump was made between the first year and the second. But back-to-back losses to end the season, both featuring huge point totals surrendered by the defense, exposed a problem. I think there was a depth shortage early on with big, physical guys because that league is just so grueling. To be honest with you, I think when we were really close to getting over that hump was I think was really where we started to get to that cycle where we felt we were going to have enough depth to continue to compete in the Big Ten.
Of the coaches from the previous regime interviewed, no one has hard feelings about the end. In a way, Nebraska is just now, six years later, getting back to that point. Nebraska was a mainstay at the Orange Bowl in Miami.
From to , six seasons, it was back in Florida another four times for bowl games. Wisconsin won the Big Ten conference in , its inaugural season then under a different name. Seven schools made up the league then, including Michigan, Northwestern, Minnesota, Illinois and Purdue.
Iowa and Indiana joined in , Ohio State in Yes, recruiting now is vastly different from recruiting even 20 years ago, but Michigan and Ohio and Wisconsin and Iowa and Minnesota have been recruiting battlegrounds for the same schools for a very long time. Papuchis added recruiting coordinator to his list of titles in In moving leagues, and no longer having any visibility in the state of Texas, Nebraska refocused its recruiting elsewhere.
The overwhelming majority stayed in-state or went to an adjacent state to play ball. Should we have stayed there with a bigger presence? Nebraska signed nine Texas prospects in the class, then five in the next class and six in the following class. In and , it signed just two Texas products. In the class it signed just three.
When we got to the Big Ten we lost some of that. We lost some of those recruiting battles in those areas. Beck remembers being at Kansas and trying to recruit for the Jayhawks and getting a boost on the trail if KU basketball had just won a national title. Visibility in everything mattered.
Bell getting to play in front of his parents every other year without them having to travel is a recruiting tool. Hard to win a battle in Pennsylvania that way.
Assistant coaches have regions to recruit and they go beyond just looking for their own positions. Look at the continued success in Florida, where head coach Scott Frost feels he still has capital with high school coaches. Beck said the hardest game during the season was the Colorado game, because of everything it meant Nebraska was giving up. Does Nebraska miss the Big 12? Not really. Nebraska has added Colorado to its schedule a success from an economic standpoint and will soon play against Oklahoma in football and Kansas State in basketball.
Moos is adding old Big Eight schools to the schedules not just to drum up nostalgia but because Nebraska is still searching for those rivalry games in the Big Ten.
But Nebraska does not miss the Big 12 even looking at the move in hindsight. Even from a distance, Moos thought Nebraska was making the right move in leaving the Big 12 for the Big Ten. He has respect and admiration for the former Pac athletic director and current Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, but Moos sees the Big Ten rivaling the SEC for the best organization of academic institutions in the country.
When in the Pac, Moos fought for equal distribution of revenue amongst all member institutions. The Big 12 was unequal, too. In the Big Ten everyone gets the same cut of the pie. Not every fan base would do that. Nebraska had to wait to become fully vested, but a fully equal league promotes parity, Moos says. Women, and particularly women of color, are underrepresented in the mathematical sciences, especially among jobs that require graduate education. We at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln UNL recognize the need to encourage and mentor undergraduate women in mathematics to pursue graduate study in mathematics and to seek mathematical careers.
We do this by annually hosting the NCUWM, made possible with generous support from the National Science Foundation, for undergraduates that provides role models, insider knowledge, opportunities to present undergraduate research, and a growing community of peers interested in issues related to creating a supportive environment for women in mathematics.

As the UNL department looked back on the s, it recognized that 23 men had earned their Ph. The department made a commitment to create a supportive and welcoming environment for women to study mathematics. By , the department received a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring because of its success in mentoring women graduate students to the Ph. To celebrate the award and continue its efforts to create a supportive environment for women in mathematics, the department hosted its first Nebraska Conference for Undergraduate Women in Mathematics in early It is important to note that by paying attention to issues that support women in mathematics, the UNL graduate program in mathematics became a more successful program for all students, regardless of gender.
For example, in the decade of the s, 45 women and 68 men earned their Ph. She earned her Ph. Her research focuses on human-centered data science, an emerging field at the intersection of human-computer interaction HCI , computer-supported cooperative work CSCW , and the statistical and computational techniques of data science. She has authored or co-authored over peer-reviewed publications and over other publications in the areas of HCI, CSCW, data science, visual analytics, machine learning, and astrophysics.
In , she received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers PECASE , the highest honor bestowed by the US government on outstanding scientists in the early stages of their careers, for her work in collaborative data-intensive science. Her interdisciplinary background includes over 15 years of software development experience in industry and NASA, and a three-year stint as the founder and CEO of a small company. She has also been a test pilot, aerobatic champion, and medalist at the World Aerobatic Championships, the Olympics of aviation.
She earned her undergraduate degree at Swarthmore College and Ph. She has more than 30 publications in areas of discrete mathematics, including both algebraic combinatorics and graph theory. Many of her work is joint with teams of student or junior women researchers. This new initiative seeks to provide data-driven solutions to current and emerging societal problems, especially as it pertains to the African American community.
Poised to bring new diverse perspectives to data science, Dr. Her research interests include the applications of differential equations to problems in biology and engineering, as well as the development of nonstandard finite difference schemes to numerically solve dynamical systems. She earned her master's and doctoral degrees in mathematics from the University of Connecticut. She held assistant professorships at The College of New Rochelle and the University of Evansville, an associate professorship at Howard University, and most recently, a full professorship at Clark Atlanta University.
