The Oregon motto was actually written years earlier in by Judge Jessie Quinn Thornton and was put on the territorial seal. The Oregon motto has had quite a turbulent history during these years and was in fact not always entitled " She Flies With Her Own Wings ". The departing vessel is a British man-of-war, while the arriving vessel is an American steamer. This symbolizes the termination of British rule in Oregon.

It is the only flag that is two-sided, showing differing designs on the front and back.
